IVANHOE GOLF CLUB

THIRTEENTH CALCUTTA

FORM GUIDE – 2004

CAFÉ NOIR

BY:  STRONG BLADDER

OUT OF:  HEAVY NIGHT

JOCKEY:  NEIL ARGALL

HANDICAP:

HI: 24  LOW: 19  CURRENT: 21

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  15

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

Started the season brilliantly with a Group 1 win first up and appeared to be an early contender for Horse of the Year with placings in two of his next 3 starts.

Had a gear change not long after and appears he is unable to adjust.  However a considered each way bet.

CROWEATER

BY:  RAVEN

OUT OF:  MAGPIE LARK

JOCKEY:  ANDREW BLIGHT

HANDICAP:

HI: 22  LOW: 20  CURRENT: 21

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  11

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

A Grade winner on two occasions in the second half of the year.  Failed by a short half head to win a Group 1 event in November.  A consistent placegetter since he broke the drought approaching mid year and appears to be peaking at the right time.  Weighted well to be a good chance.

MILK CHURN

BY:  ALLOWRIE

OUT OF:  MEADOW LEA

JOCKEY:  STEPHEN BUTTERFIELD

HANDICAP:

HI: 19  LOW: 13  CURRENT: 14

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  27

NUMBER OF WINS:  3

A maiden runner who came under the watchful eye of the handicapper early in his career.  His preparation has been flawless with a Group 1 win in June.  Two weeks later had another win after being promoted to a higher class.  No telling where he may go.  Definitely a win bet.

SHORT FUSE

BY:  LODGER

OUT OF: DAUGHTER’S DAUGHTER

JOCKEY:  PAUL CLARKE

HI: 8  LOW: 4   CURRENT: 6

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  58

NUMBER OF WINS:  7

The most consistent performer in the field this year and rightly deserves his top weight.  However it took him until November to win a Group 1 event when he beat Croweater by a short half head.  Will need to maintain his consistency to win this staying event.  Take him for the win.

THE LODGER

BY:  SALESMAN

OUT OF:  FARMER’S DAUGHTER

JOCKEY:  RODGER CLARKE

HANDICAP:

HI: 21  LOW: 18  CURRENT: 18

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  27

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

His wins have been in Grade events this year.  Has not been able to salute in a Group 1.  Has however sired the Horse of the Year and another who has won Group events.  His staying powers should see him perform well over a distance event on his preferred firm track.  Each way.

SOUTHPAW

BY:  LODGER

OUT OF: FARMERS DAUGHTER

JOCKEY:  STUART CLARKE

HANDICAP:

HI: 9  LOW: 7  CURRENT: 9

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  37

NUMBER OF WINS:  6

Not as many wins as his sibling.  However the quality of the wins is what needs to be gauged, two Group 1 wins for the year.  And this despite his stables being vandalised and all his running gear stolen.  Every chance the stable could be going for the Quinella if not the Trifecta.  Take him on the nose.

THE PHANTOM

BY:  MR. WALKER

OUT OF:  GHOST WHO WALKS

JOCKEY:  STEVE COLE

HI: 11  LOW: 8  CURRENT: 8

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  23

NUMBER OF WINS:  3

Has lived up to his name this year with rare appearances at the starting barrier.  Regardless of this has had his weight increased 3kg since this time last year and improved his rankings this year in Horse of the Year.  One can only suggest that if he’s a starter the odds will be short.

TECHNOCRAT

BY:  CORRECT SWING

OUT OF:  SWIVEL HIPS

JOCKEY:  ALLAN DAVIES

HANDICAP:

HI: 20  LOW: 17  CURRENT: 20

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  25

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

Although his form is a little down on last year he is a past winner of this event.  A come from behind winner at Benalla which shows his ability to win staying events.  Weighted lighter than this time last year, which must be a big advantage.  Each way odds or better.

LATIN LOVER

BY:  EVIL WINK

OUT OF:  BALMY NIGHTS

JOCKEY:  KEITH DEL ZOPPO

HI: 22  LOW: 19  CURRENT: 19

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  14

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

Failed by a nose in a Group 1 event in October this year.  However has had two Grade wins, his rankings in Horse of the Year belie his true potential.  Had not been a consistent starter earlier in the year with his rankings effectively gained over a shorter than normal period.  Each way chance.

UPPEN DOWN

BY:  ONE PUTT

OUT OF:  READ THE BORROW

JOCKEY:  DAVID FORD

HANDICAP:

HI: 20  LOW: 18  CURRENT: 18

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  27

NUMBER OF WINS:  4

His wins include a Group 1 win in May.  Weighted exactly as he was last year.  All other statistics are also similar.  The difference between last year and this year is an addition to his gear which gives him an advantage now that he didn’t have then.  Is definitely a win chance.

DARK HORSE

BY:  MORNING SHADE

OUT OF:  SUNRISE

JOCKEY:  KEN GRIST

HI:  20  LOW: 15  CURRENT: 19

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  23

NUMBER OF WINS:  4

A scratching last year so its impossible to compare form.  Consistently chasing the big stakes overseas, but when he has fronted has proved to be a consistent placegetter.  Must be considered.  Each way or better.

ODDS ON

BY:  THE PUNTER

OUT OF:  TWO FLIES

JOCKEY:  GORDON HILL

HANDICAP:

HI: 19  LOW: 12  CURRENT: 12

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  44

NUMBER OF WINS:  8

A previous winner of this event.  His connections are astute horse fanciers and are always in the money.  Has had a tremendous run the latter part of the year and has been handicapped accordingly.  Has taken the bit between his teeth and responded to the heavier weight.  For the win.

KIRIBILLI

BY:  THE LODGE

OUT OF:  JOHN

JOCKEY:  DAVID HOWARD

HANDICAP:

HI: 17  LOW: 12  CURRENT: 14

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  31

NUMBER OF WINS:  4

Another runner who has hit form at the right time of the year.  Won a Group 1 in September and was second in August.  Since then has rarely been out of the money.  His rise up the rankings accelerated over the last three months.  A flighty colt who will definitely last the distance.  Win only bet.

TIENENMEN

BY:  KELTYS SON

OUT OF:  HALPENNIES CHOICE

JOCKEY:  FRED HOWE

HANDICAP:

HI: 31  LOW: 26  CURRENT: 31

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  2

NUMBER OF WINS:  0

Has had better years and possibly will perform to his capabilities in the future.  That said, he has wanted this for a long time.  Two seasons ago defied the odds to take home the David Primrose.  One of the light weights who can wear down higher handicapped starters in a staying event.

Definitely worth a place bet.

MARS BAR

BY:  TURKISH DELIGHT

OUT OF:  SWEET TOOTH

JOCKEY:  TREVOR JACKSON

HANDICAP:

HI: 25  LOW: 23  CURRENT: 25

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  10

NUMBER OF WINS:  1

Has pulled up lame on a number of occasions, so form is hard to gauge.  His grade win in July put him equal third in a Group 1 event.  Has added a new weapon to his armoury which observers say has got him quicker out of the gates.  Is capable (if fit) of anything.  Place bet.

SEA CHANGE

BY:  SUNSEEKER

OUT OF:  HEADIN’ SOUTH

JOCKEY:  FRED KITSON

HANDICAP:

HI: 28  LOW: 26  CURRENT: 27

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  1

NUMBEROF WINS: 0

Another maiden runner who has maintained a consistency in his handicap.  Since his move to Southern climes has devoted more time to the track.  This year’s results don’t do him justice as he suffered a rocky preparation.  Settling now into his new stables.  A wise stallion who could salute.  Place bet.

THE GENERAL

BY:  LINCOLNS NEMESIS

OUT OF:  GREY COAT

JOCKEY:  DAMIEN LEE

HANDICAP:

HI: 13  LOW: 10  CURRENT: 10

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  11

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

A maiden runner who was told from day 1 to go play in the big kid’s paddock.  And play he did, winning a Group 1 event in October by a nose over Latin Lover.  Has maintained his form over the past months and definitely is a chance to salute the judges.  Take him on the nose.

WIDE TERRAIN

BY:  AGENCY

OUT OF:  EQUITY

JOCKEY:  GEOFF LONGLAND

HANDICAP:

HI: 19  LOW: 16  CURRENT: 16

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  5

NUMBER OF WINS: 1

Another maiden who’s form doesn’t reveal the truth.  Scraped into the field by a flared nostril and is determined to justify his acceptance.  A smart experienced stallion with staying ability.  Has saluted once and placed in his short time at the track.  The wise punter would be advised to consider him a solid each way bet.

ARCHBISHOP

BY:  CARDINALS PLEASURE

OUT OF:  NUNS DELIGHT

JOCKEY:  LAURIE MANNIX

HANDICAP:

HI: 19  LOW: 17  CURRENT: 19

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  12

NUMBER OF WINS:  1

Weighted higher than this time last year.  Another starter with dubious starting credentials.  Scored an ace earlier in the year and is still basking in the glory.  A capable performer on his day who could be one of the upsets.  Weighted well for an each way punt.

CELTIC JOY

BY:  ERSE

OUT OF: GLENFIDICH

JOCKEY:  DEREK MCDONALD

HANDICAP:

HI: 14  LOW: 11  CURRENT: 13

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  21

NUMBER OF WINS:  3

Another quiet achiever who goes about his business in a no fuss manner.  A consistent placegetter who is capable of anything on his day as his three grade wins attest.  Weighted slightly better than this time last year, which will help in a staying event.  Each way or better.

ROUGH RUNNER

BY:  STRATE LINE

OUT OF:  CHECK THE CARD

JOCKEY:  TARGE MIFSUD

HANDICAP:

HI: 20  LOW: 15  CURRENT: 15

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  31

NUMBER OF WINS:  4

The connections of this starter have two runners in the field.  And both jockeys are keen to outdo the other.  Both horses are similarly weighted and sibling rivalry is rife.  An extremely competitive stallion who’ll be going all out.  Take him for the win.

BIRDIE CHANCE

BY:  STRATE LINE

OUT OF:  CHECK THE CARD

JOCKEY:  TONY MIFSUD

HANDICAP:

HI: 20  LOW: 14  CURRENT: 16

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  38

NUMBER OF WINS:  5

As noted above sibling rivalry is rife.  However has won a staying event earlier this year taking out the Fred Howe Winter Cup.  Has been a consistent placegetter as indicated by his tally in the Horse of the Year awards.  Odds have firmed considerably.  For the win and quinella.

KIWIS HOPE

BY:  LONG WHITE CLOUD

OUT OF:  SILVER FERN

JOCKEY:  BRENDON MITCHELL

HANDICAP:

HI: 12  LOW:  8  CURRENT:  11

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  17

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

Has had a couple of grade wins and a number of placings from his infrequent starts this year.  Forget the guide, his form is difficult to ascertain, due to his rare appearances.  Has been a consistent placegetter when he does make it to the barriers.  Each way or better.

EAR MUFF

BY:  HIGH DECIBEL

OUT OF:  RED EARS

JOCKEY:  DES NIXON

HANDICAP:

HI: 22  LOW: 20  CURRENT: 21

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  7

NUMBER OF WINS:  1

Another who has not approached the starting gates as often this year.  Has had a touch of the wanders, gracing the track only when he wishes to.  Again, one whose form is hard to gauge, but is weighted lighter than this time last year.  A previous winner who must be considered a chance.  Each way.

KNIGHT-ERRANT

BY:  CHARLEMAGNE

OUT OF:  DISTRESSED DAMSEL

JOCKEY:  PAUL PALLADINO

HANDICAP:

HI: 25  LOW: 20  CURRENT: 21

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  18

NUMBER OF WINS:  3

A middle of the field runner who is defending the title.  Can he make it back to back?  Lost a Group 1 in January by a length.  Still achieved three Grade wins and a number of placings.  Weighted well for a staying event and responds well to a firm track.  Each way.

A TOUCH OF BLARNEY

BY:  IRISH EYES

OUT OF:  SWEET COLLEEN

JOCKEY: STEPHEN O’SULLIVAN

HANDICAP:

HI: 17  LOW: 15  CURRENT: 15

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  25

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

Better performed than this time last year in overall rankings, considering he has had one win less.  Proves that he is a consistent placegetter and will improve over the longer distance.  It’s this type of consistency that wins staying events.  Take him for the win.

SOMETIME

BY:  IF I CAN

OUT OF:  MAYBE I WILL

JOCKEY: ANDREW PETRICOLA

HANDICAP:

HI: 8   LOW: 5  CURRENT: 7

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  33

NUMBER OF WINS:  4

Definitely one of the favourites for this year’s cup.  Finished just outside the placings in Horse of the Year.  Another whose record was marred by inconsistent appearances at the barrier.  Carrying the same weight as last year, but has shed a couple of kilos over recent months.  Take him on the nose.

HIT IT HARD

BY:  TIENMEN

OUT OF:  STUFF U

JOCKEY:  CHRIS PRIEMS

HANDICAP:

HI: 15  LOW: 10  CURRENT: 11

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  39

NUMBER OF WINS:  5

At the time of writing running third in Horse of the Year.  A much better performed runner than last year.  His wins include a Group 1 in February winning by a length with a further length to third.  A strapping colt who is capable of anything.  For the win.

SHAFTED

BY:  ATTITUDE

OUT OF:  HUMBLE PIE

JOCKEY:  JOHN QUINLAN

HANDICAP:

HI: 19  LOW: 16  CURRENT: 17

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  14

NUMBER OF WINS:  2

Has struggled a little under heavier weights this year.  Notwithstanding did take out a Group 1 in August in what would have appeared to be much stronger company.  A gutsy stayer with a determination to succeed.  If he takes the bit could be hard to beat.  Each way.

UNDER THE THUMB

BY:  LEGOPENER

OUT OF:  INLAW NIGHTMARE

JOCKEY:  NICK ROGERS

HANDICAP:

HI: 16  LOW: 14  CURRENT: 16

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS: 8

NUMBER OF WINS: 0

Another runner whose appearances have been rare this year.  Makes it hard for the punters when form is difficult to gauge.  What can be said is that his handicap has remained consistent.  Is certainly capable of an upset and should be taken at least for a place.

Page 7.

C. SHARP MINOR

BY:  C. SHARP MAJOR

OUT OF:  DISCORD

JOCKEY:  CRAIG SHARP

HANDICAP:

HI: 19  LOW: 18  CURRENT: 18

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS: 11

NUMBER OF WINS: 2

Like the prodigal, this year returned to the fold.  And in the short time he’s been back has made his presence felt.  Has been a consistent performer and will challenge for Horse of the Year next year if his form continues in the same vein.  Each way or better.

THE TITAN

BY:  COLONEL SANDERS

OUT OF: BIG MAC

JOCKEY:  BEN SMITH

HANDICAP:

HI: 20  LOW: 16  CURRENT: 16

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  18

NUMBER OF WINS:  3

Weighted heavier than at this time last year.  And his performances throughout the year explain why.  Quick out of the gates, but with a tendency to use all of the track and more.  If he could stay near the running rails would record more wins.  Winner of the David Ford Cup.  Definitely an each way bet.

CUTTERS SON

BY:  CHAFFCUTTER

OUT OF:  ATTITUDE

JOCKEY:  ANDREW TOME

HANDICAP:

HI: 12  LOW: 9  CURRENT: 9

CHAMP/SHIP POINTS:  25

NUMBER OF WINS:  3

A massive improver this year.  Has definitely consolidated his place in the big boys yard.  A high pacing colt who loves saluting the judge.  Devoid of silverware this year, which would be chaffing the connections.  Doesn’t just want some silverware wants the silverware.  Only for the win.
