2002 News
21st December 2002
A great! effort form Fred Howe (Net 61) takes out the David Primrose Champion of Champions. A momentous year for Fred winning the final competition at age 80. Set your goals to do the same !! Congratulations also to Laurie Mannix runner up with a net 64.14th December 2002
Gordon Hill (total 131 strokes) blitzed the field in the final round of the Vin O'Meara competition to win by one stroke from Ben Smith and David Ford. Ben won 2nd place in the Calcutta on countback. Gordon backed himself and took out the first prize in the Calcutta and Laurie Mannix backed both Ben and David and collected 2nd and 3rd prize. To his surprise we celebrated Fred's 80th birthday with a magnificent cake baked and decorated by Cheryl. The spit roast put on by the club was very good and everybody had a great time at the end of year breakup.
Don't forget next week is the David Primrose Champion of Champions.

A cool showery day which saw reasonably good scores despite the dampness. Laurie Mannix won the monthly medal and B Grade with a net 65 on countback (largely due to his blistering 26 stableford points on the back 9!). A Grade was won by Andrew Petricola and Ken Grist with net 65's also. The Calcutta was held and Neil's usual comical form guide was very entertaining (Ed. I will post the form guide on the web site as soon as I get it). The Calcutta Pool is ~$1200 so the winner gets around $840 and the runner up $360. Big time indeed!NEXT WEEK is the start of the 2 round Vin O'Meara championship so don't forget to turn up!
Rule Clarification - Additional Item
The garden beds alongside the left side of the 16th and 17th holes are not a free drop. Howard is still reviewing some of the rules so once thats done I'll post them to the web site permanently and distribute a sheet to everybody.Rule Clarifications
The following rule clarifications are being checked by the club professional.GENERAL POINTS
A) PONDS - As per Rule 26-1, You cannot assume your ball went into a pond if it is not visible when you take the shot e.g. from the 5th tee pond on right is out of sight. You MUST take a provisional shot if you think you went into the water. Where you can see the water (13th tee) then it is up to your marker or other members of your group to observe it entering the water)
B) GARDEN BEDS - A Garden bed MUST have garden mulch! Note. You can also always take 2 club length s relief if any tree or bush in the area is under two club lengths . I will list the garden beds that are ok to take drop from in the rule sheet.
C) MARGIN OF A HAZARD - In the absence of specific white paint marks the edge of a hazard (eg. pond on right on 14th hole) is where the ground starts to slope into the hazard.
D) RELIEF FROM FENCES - You can only get relief when the fence is internal to the course. External (boundary) fences are NOT immovable obstructions and you do not get any relief.
E) OUT OF BOUND FENCES
A ball is in bounds ONLY if the whole ball is inside the any part of the OOB marker. Some people are incorrectly assuming that a ball which is between the OOB posts is in play.

Our first really hot day topping at 33deg and a good turnup of 26 players and 2 guests. A grade fielded 15 players and B Grade 11 players. Over the year the ratio has been roughly 50/50. Stephen O'Sullivan had the best round of the day with 44 winning B Grade and Ashley Spicer found some form to take out A Grade with 40 points. Next week is the Calcutta so don't forget CASH ONLY and no syndicates.Duncan (Golf Pro) has reviewed the local rules and a rule sheet isbeing prepared which will be posted to the web site once el preso gets a chance to type it up! Two Key points to remember are
1) You cannot assume your ball went into a pond if it is not visible when you take the shot eg 5th tee - pond on right is out of sight. You MUST take a provisional shot if you think you went into the water. Where you can see the water (13th tee) then it is up to your marker or other members of your group to observe it entering the water)
2) A Garden bed MUST have mulch! Note. You can also always take 2 club length s relief if any tree or bush in the area is under two club lengths . I will list the garden beds that are ok to take drop from in the rule sheet
16th November 2002
A beautiful 25 degree day (take note Mr. Primrose) blue sky, no wind and a course in good condition with the first signs of drying out. In this idyllic paradise Andrew Petricola had a double whammie - Golfpass Matchplay winner and A Grade winner with 71 off the stick. Commiserations to Rodger the Dodger who came runner up in the Golfpass Matchplay. Well done to you both for getting into the final and rolling all the GolfPass players!! B Grade winners were Neil Argall (1 point behing in the championship now!) and Stephen O'Sullivan with +5.A REMINDER: Coming Events
23rd Nov - Stableford
30th Nov - Dec Monthly Medal and Calcutta (Sausage Sizzle afterwards)
7th and 14 Dec - Two rounds of the Vin O'Meara Trophy
21st Dec - David Primrose Champion of Champions9th November 2002
Nick Rogers obviously loves marital bliss and he shot a net 62 to take out this months monthly medal...well done Nick .. sorry about the new handicap :-). A grade turned up in force and Nick won with net 62. B Grade was won by Trevor Jackson (a good Calcutta bet now!).
It is truly amazing how players can have trouble playing at other courses (eg. Bendigo) and then return to Ivanhoe and knock its lights out!. Its like putting on an old pair of slippers again. In fact, more than half the players beat the course rating whereas on our trip away NO players beat the course rating.2nd November 2002 - Bendigo Challenge
(for photos click here .. takes a while to load the pictures so be patient)
Once again we had a great trip to Bendigo, the company was great and we had perfect golfing weather for the whole weekend, cool and not the predicted 34 degrees. The first round was played at Neangar Park, which was fairly dry but the greens were very good and quite fast. Some players were recovering from some slight over indulgences from the previous evening (or morning should I say). After the round some players went to the pub and had a bet and some good boys had lunch with their wives (Good boy Bob!)
The results after round 1 were
Ashley Spicer 32 points
Andrew Petricola 31 and
Targe Mifsud and Allan Davies 30 pointsOn the Saturday day we all had a great meal at the Julie Anna Motel and celebrated Rodgers birthday the night was rounded off with one of Marlene's impromptu and funny speeches.
The second and final round was played at Axedale which was in great condition both fairways and greens. The members at Axedale could not have been friendlier and they looked after us very nicely (The committee will be sending them a thank you letter). The final results were.
Winner: Allan Davies 64 points.
Runner up: Andrew Petricola 61 points.
3rd place: Ashley Spicer 60points.
Putting Award: Ashley Spicer 58 putts
NTP. Ken Grist(2 - 1 for each round!) and Chris Priems.
NAGA: David Howard.Allan was awarded the winners jacket (carefully purchased by the VP at enormous expense) and a new award the Cocks Plate was awarded to the worst drive of the day which went to Keith Delzoppo.
VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO
Rodger for organising the weekend
Neil for helping Rodger
Cheryl for donating the ball prizes and organising the bbq
Chris for organising the tees and performing all the final scoring calculations
Ladies for keeping (some of) the men on the straight and narrow
Axedale GC for being great hosts
Everybody for coming and making it such a nice weekendCAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR!!
26th October 2002
Well, we have some very silly billies don't we that won today and reduced their handicaps just in time for the Bendigo trip. The silly billies are Chris Priems, Bob McDonald and Stuart Clarke (A grade winners with -1) and 2nd place B Grade winner Gordon Hill with +1. Smart winner was Nick Rogers who is not going to Bendigo he won B grade with a +3 the best score of the day!19th October 2002
David Howard won A grade with 36 points - 4 clear of Tim Dillon and Ken Grist won B grade with 37. Obviously David and Ken were unaffected by the 'scored' greens which I found made me go cross eyed when lining up putts - thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
BENDIGO TRIP
All is set for the Bendigo weekend Friday week so get practising and hope that Neangar Park booking staff can still remember we're coming. Rodger booked with them THREE times for this this trip and they still forgot - but don't worry its ok and the first group will go off at 7.56am on Saturday 2nd November.12th October 2002
2 runaway winners this week Tim Dillon(43) in A Grade and Bob McDonald(42) in B Grade. A great day 24 degrees and blue skies (hear that Mr Primrose!). I am hoping to get some news of our scottish mate lost in London but alas no despatches have arrived :-(
5th October 2002
The course was lush and green today .. who would thought we were in a drought? The fairways and greens were longer than usual and the balls stopped quickly and putts were pulling up short. In these 'US Open' conditions David Howard was 3 net strokes clear of the field to win the Monthly Medal with Net 67. Don't forget COMMITTEE MEETING NEXT WEEK.
28th September 2002
So much for Spring we had 8deg and freezing (Primrose weather!). Given the conditions the scoring was pretty good. A grade was won by Andrew Petricola and Targe Mifsud with 37 points and B grad had a triumvirate of winners Neil Argall, Laurie Mannix and Stephen O'Sullivan. Hopefully we'll all thaw out in time for next weeks Monthly Medal.Cup Weekend Bendigo Trip Deposits ($50) are due NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Note. There is a motion to be voted on at the next meeting to decide if social stableford rounds are handicapped as normal and counted toward championship points. Matchplay players would put in two cards - one for matchplay the other for the 'normal' stableford round.
14th September 2002
Congratulations to David Ford the Matchplay Champion for 2002 and commiserations to Rodger Clarke the runner up.. Here's how David won the trophy
16th March 2002 defeated Ken Grist 2 & 1
29th June 2002 defeated Bob McDonald 5 & 4
Semi Finals on 10th August 2002 defeated Derek McDonald 4up
31st August 2002
A Grade performed well with David Howard winning on 38 points. B Grade performance was an ordinary day out with Keith Delzoppo and Rodger Clarke sharing a win on 34 points. Note.Tee off is 7.20am next Saturday!24th August 2002
Well once again the weather forecasters got it horribly wrong and we enjoyed a beautiful Melbourne spring day of 17 deg and blue skies. Gerry Barber almost got a hole in one on the 12th NTP and at least has the money! A grade Stableford was won by Chris Priems with 39 points and B grade by Ed Bower who despite fighting a wrist injury causing the old wayward shot got 43 points!17th August 2002
Bob McDonald got a hole in one on the 7th hole and not surprisingly this alos meant he got the Eagles Nest(another Eagles Nest won by a scotsman but this time a different one ...Well done Bob. This is the 3rd 'hole in one' in the clubs history (previously David Primrose in 2002 and Fred Howe in 1996).
Par competition winners were Stuart Clarke and Steve Cole in A Grade(+3) and Allan Davies in B Grade (+1).10th August 2002
On a wild and windy day arecord was broken for the most number of 'chip and putts' to resolve a matchplay competition. SEVEN times David Howard and Rodger Clarke went backwards and forwards up and down the practice green. In the end it came down one putt which rodger sank on the 7th turn that settled the match. David Ford continued his fine form, unfortunately for Derek McDonald and won his match.
Matchplay Results. D.Ford d D.McDonald 4up and R.Clarke d D.Howard(playoff).
Social Stableford results were pathetic across the board (Note the winners scores). Everybody was having problems a bright sunny but very windy day.
Stableford Results:
A Grade: A.Petricola(32)
B. Grade: A. Davies(34)
NTP on the 12th and the Money. the honorable Vice President Gordon Hill..3rd August 2002
On his return to A Grade David Ford showed why he should be there with Nett 62 to win the Monthly Medal. Well Done David. Talking of David's Stuart Clarke has now overtaken David Primrose in the Club Championship (Its taken 3 months .. I can hear the chuckle from the UK :->
B Grade winner was Ben Smith with a Nett 63 returning to form from a 'spell'.
Nearest the pins were 7th A.Davies and 12th A.Petricola (after much debate about leaving marker - or not leaving - markers on the 12th...Andrew got it because he was the only one smart enough to leave a marker).
27th July 2002
The day of multiple firsts! A Grade had 3 winners Gordon Hill, Tim Dillon and Andrew Petricola with 37 points and B Grade David Ford and Nick Rogers 41 points. Well done to ALL the winners.20th July 2002
Tough conditions prevailed including horizontal rain for the later groups. Stuart Clarke was our A grade winner and is now tied in the lead on the Championship points with David Primrose (It's taken 10 weeks for the rest of the club to catch up with the Laird!). Congratulations too go to our new member Tim Dillon who won B grade with a plus 4.TRIVIA SPOT

3rd July The Primrose Report
I had my first real feast of golf since I have been back, a 36 hole event with the golf society at work. The course was Seaford Head down on the south coast. It's a proper links course (right by the sea rather than no trees), fairly hilly. A bit of a trek to get there (around an hour and a half) but it was worth it. Shockingly the weather was fantastic, blue skies just a slight breeze (only for the morning round though). The course was very dry and running. The greens As for the competition I was up against. Surprisingly I was the low marker for the day with other handicaps ranging from 6 to 28 (allegedly).I was conned into playing for a bit of cash, couple of quid for the front 9, back 9 and overall. The other two in my group discounted me from the running. Until I chipped in for a feathered at the first hole that is. I covered the front 9 in two under par and still lost the money. It's almost like making the donations sorry playing skins at Ivanhoe. The 10th hole was a short downhill par 3 of 130 yards with a bunker short of the green. Unfortunately the wind was directly behind which meant that there was no way of stopping the ball on the green. I had a double there which stopped my round a bit. I did manage to recover a little bit to finish the round at 1 under par for 38 points. I though that was quite good and may even have a chance as the wind was getting up.
Well, I thought the broderick had a few bandits, but this golf society gives out sombreros when you pay your fees. Out of the 18 players on the day, I ended up with the third lowest points total. The winner played off 17 and had 47 points. That put a bit of a dampener on the afternoon round and my chances of winning. It was however, my first sub-par round in the UK for 4 years.
The wind was really blowing in the afterrnoon and despite the ERC doing its stuff (480 yards par 5 ended up with a 350 yard drive and a wedge from 130 yards over the green), I had an absolute barry crocker to finish with 26 points. My excuse was that I was knackered (which I was). It would have been bad enough playing 36 holes in one day on a flat course, but I was stuffed after climbing up and down all day. Tiredness affected the other players as well, the afternoon winner only had 44 points.
I am going up north this weekend to play my own course, assuming its opened. The regional qualifier for the British Open is due to be played there on the 8th of July, so the course should be in tippety tip top condition. It will be good to play a course with fast greens again.
Until the next report,
David
ps I found out that you can now buy ERC fairway woods. I wonder what my next purchase is likely to be !!!!!
22nd June 2002. The Fred Howe Winter Cup was played in good conditions on Saturday with a field of 22 players. Fred valiantly managed to come in ahead of 13 (younger) players - so well done Sir Fred. As always it was a great competition and everybody enjoyed the sausage sizzle after the game. The final results for the Fred Howe Winter Cup are
1st: Andrew. Petricola(78)
2nd Stuart Clarke(76)
3rd: David Howard(74)
4th: Neil Argall, Ashley Spicer(73)
5th Andrew Tome(72)
6th Allan Davies(70)
7th Chris Priems,Rodger Clarke(66)
8th Fred Howe(65)6th June 2002. We have an email from David Primrose now working in the UK.
How are things going down there, I hope the weather is better in Melbourne than a spring day in London. Nice to see that I am still the top banana on the championship leaderboard. Although there must be a problem with your website as I can't believe that a certain N Argall is in 2nd place.
I have managed a grand total of 12 holes golf since I made my triumphant return to the homeland. This is due to the surprisingly poor weather rather than a lack of enthusiasm. Hopefully I haven't lost the magic touch for luring feathered beasts into my pot !!! I am disappearing off from work early on Thursday to fit in a round. So I shall keep you informed as to my success or lack of. Whatever the case may be.
Hope you and the rest of the gang are hitting them long and straight (but not straight into the trees).
If anyone would David's email address please send a request to Allan Davies
Note: Next weeks tee time of 8.20am is the latest time we get this year due to the winter solstice.
8th June 2002. Stableford. A Grade Winner Targe Mifsud(43), B Grade Winner N.Argall(38). NTP 12th Adrian Bartlett.

25/5/2002. News from the expeditionary force. Allan and Rodger reviewed available courses around Bendigo this weekend just gone and confirmed Neangar Park for the Saturday game We saw the cub championship final group at Neangar Park and watched a cerebral palsy golfer hit a ball as far and straight as Mr. Primrose. This gutsy golfer was off 2 handicap!!! We also discovered a real gem of a course at Axedale for the Sunday game. Details have yet to be fully organised and Rodger will report to the next committee meeting the final costs and logisitics.
18/5/2002
