Chris Priems and Gordon Hill blitzed A and B grade with a +6 and +5 respectively today (who says we don;t like par golf!!)

A Grade) C.Priems(+6),A.Tome(-2),P.Clarke,S.Cole(-3)
B Grade) G.Hill(+5),S.O'Sullivan(+3),R.Clarke(+2)

3rd January 2004

What an efficient start to the New Year...the new committee took over and run the day without a glitch!! Well done Tony Mifsud on the tee and Gordon with the presidential results presentation!!

Neil Argall cried out "Now I can play in the Champion of Champions!!" as he fought backe the tears after the nerve racking countback on 3 players with 67 each. Neil won by 0.5 of a stroke and loves it!! Commiserations to Chris Priems who lost out by the 0.5 stroke and Steve Cole who both had 67's to win A grade (at least they got 4 championship points).

Talking of championship points you must be within 6 shots of your handicap to earn points now (introduced in the AGM). So in the results shown below all players with net 73 or less got points (sorry Stuart!).

Results for today are
Monthly medal winner on countback. Neil Argall.
A Grade 15 Handicap or less) C.Priems,S.Cole(67),A.P'cola,P.Clarke(72),S.Clarke(75)
B Grade 16 handicap or higher) N.Argall(67),S.O'Sullivan,K.Grist(69),Tony Mifsud,T.Jackson,D.Nixon(70)

MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES!!

27th December 2003
A few players suffered from excessive Christmas Pud and Grog today (well at least I did!). Congratulations to Laurie Mannix who had a hole in one on the 4th green. Laurie hit a 9 iron and the whole group only saw the ball fly to the green, Laurie thought it had rolled through but there it was sitting in the hole. That now brings our club up to four hole in ones (Fred Howe on the old 18th, Bob McDonald on the 7th, Laurie on the 4th and David Primrose on the ??? hole (let me know which hole it was David). Steve Cole won the social stableford with a 39, 2nd David Ford(37) and 3rd Targe Mifsud(36).

A fine day with great conditions today. The David Primrose Champion of Champions was a hard fought contest with Andrew Tome (Net 61) winning by just one stroke Paul Clarke and Nick Rogers (both with net 62).

13th December 2003
The final round of the Vin O'Meara commenced with David Ford and Paul Paladino as the first round leaders. They were both joined by Steve Cole to end up as the leaders after the final round. Paul Paladino put in a 63 and 64 to win by two strokes with a total of 129. Well done Paul a great effort. David and Steve had 131 each and Steve won the countback because of his 34 off the stick on the back 9. So final results were
Winner. Paul Paladino (129)
Second on countback, Steve Cole (131) and
Third David Ford (131)

There were many other notable rounds including net 61's from Andrew Blight and Stuart Clarke.

The AGM was held and the new committee was formed. Details will be posted next week.

29th November 2003
A pleasant 34 degree day agreed with Fred Howe who blitzed the field to win the final Monthly Medal for the year and the B Grade comp with a net 65 - showing all before him that when age has nothing to do with playing good golf!!

David Howard and Nick Rogers won A outright with net 66's. Neil and Cheryl once again organised a great Calcutta event (thanks from us all) backed up by Rodgers impeccable sausage sizzle. The Calcutta was a lot of fun and the pool is $1280 with 1st place getting 70%, 2nd place 20% and third 10%. Good luck to all the punters!!

Results for today are
A Grade) D.Howard,N.Rogers(66),P.Clarke(68),A.Petricola(70)
B Grade) F.Howe(65),N.Argall(67),B.Smith,Tony Mifsud(69)

NEW POINT SCORING MOTION

The debate about the point scoring system and whether it should be changed is underway. Currently the point scoring works like this.

If you are a winner in A Grade you get 4 points, If second you get 2 points and if third you get 1 point.

If you are a winner in B Grade you get 4 points, If second you get 2 points and if third you get 1 point.

The motion proposed at the last meeting was that the points were awarded in sequence from 1st to last (ie. in the same fashion as the ball run) disregarding the grades. One method suggested was 10 for first place overall, 9 for second, 8 for third, 7 for fourth etc. and the other was to have 30 points for winner, 29 for second, 28 for third and then points all the way down to the last player. So I did some research using all the results for 2003 and found the following.

1) If you use 30 points and down, regardless of grade, then the first 5 places were current A Grade players

2) If you use 10 points down to 1 point, regardless of grade, then the first 6 places were current A Grade players

3) If you use 5points down to 1 point, regardless of grade, then the first 7 places were current A Grade players

What this basically reveals is that if we change to this new approach it will favour A grade players and a B grade player is highly unlikely to ever win the club championship.

Preso.

22nd November 2003
The cooler weather obviously brings out the best in our honorable secretary,Neil, who put in the best stableford round today of 39 to win B grade ahead of 2 players who were only one stableford point back - maybe Neil is a good bet for the Calcutta next week.. In fact B grade blitzed A grade in scoring today. A grade was won with only 36 points by El Presidente just 1 stableford point clear of 3 players.

Results for today are
A) A.Davies(36), D.Howard, D.McDonald, A.Petricola(35), Targe Mifsud ,L.Mannix, P.Clarke(33)
B) N.Argall(39), J.Quinlan, D.Ford(38), T.Mifsud(34)

DONT FORGET NEXT WEEK IS THE CALCUTTA AND SAUSAGE SIZZLE SO BRING YOUR MONEY...NO MONEY, NO BET!!

15th November 2003
A blistering 38 degree day (Melbourne always manages to deliver the hot weather with a gazummp!!). the course though is surprisingly green (remember this time last year it was bone dry!!). Buoyed by the Bendigo win David Howard trounced the A Grade field with a +5, closely followed by Laurie Mannix (who is obviously recovering with a vengeance!), Paul Clark came third with a +2 (which is good off 7 n'it). B Grade was won by our new President Elect, Gordon Hill with a creditable +2. Rodger the Dodger just missed out and took second place with a +2 which now puts him in the lead of the club championship. Paul Paladino and John Quinlan came 3rd with -1.
Results for today are
A Grade. D.Howard(+5),L.Mannix(+3),P.Clarke(+2)

8th November 2003
The Monthly Medal was decided on a countback today and Derek McDonald nosed out Targe Mifsud by less than 1!! Good effort from both of you but Derek has the trophy! The way the countback is done is 1) Take the last 9 hole total and divide by half the handicap then if still the same net score then 2) take the last six holes and divide by one third of the handicap (This is what we had to do to determine this countback :-
Derek had 27 for last 6 holes and 13 handicap so 27-(13/3) = 22.66
Targe had 29 for the last six holes and 17 handicap so 29-(17/3)=23.33.

Results for today are
A) D.McDonald,Targe Mifsud(67)D.Howard(68),P.Clarke,D.Ford(70)
B) L.Mannix(68),R.Clarke,G.Hill(69),K.Grist(70)

1st/2nd November 2003
Once again the merry band and partners had a great weekend at Bendigo. Brilliantly organised and executed flawlessly by our esteemed social secretary Rodger the Dodger. We played Neangar Park on the Saturday morning in dry conditions and all proceeded to hack our way through the game with Ashley Spicer leading the field with a 31 stableford, 4 clear of the nearest chasers. A pleasant Saturday afternoon was had by all with plenty of grog and Chris Priems secret recipe biscuits (delicately served in a white bucket!). The boardwalk cafe by the lake was the dinner destination Saturday night and we managed to make a lot of noise (especially Jason) without scaring away the other patrons. The food was excellent, the beer reasonable and the wine was obviously only meant to be purchased by Tattslotto winners!!.
Sunday was a beautiful sunny day at Axedale and the course was again well presented with nice fairway lies but the greens had only just been cored. Most players were once again battling, (in fact only 3 rounds out of 32 rounds for the weekend were 30 or better) but David Howard sliced through the field to win outright with a total of 58 stableford points for the two days (NAGA to Winner in 12 months must be the fastest improvement in our club history!!). Well done David!!! Ashley couldn't catch up and was only 2 points behind for 56 points and had to settle for the runner up trophy. A second round charge from Gordon Hill was a valiant effort but the first round base was too low for Gordon to have a real chance. Chris Priems won the Cox Plate for sending his tee shot on the 18th green onto the club house roof. Next year we hope to get into Yarrawonga. Photos from the trip have been added to the Club Photos (on left side of this screen).
Special thanks to the ladies aulixiary that once again kept us all (well most of us) on the straight and narrow and a special thank you to Marlene for her entertaining award to Jason Grattan (see photos)

New photos from Fred's 80th and a Club Group photo are in 'Club Photos' on left side

25th October 2003
Blistering performance from both grade winners today with +5's to win. A Grade was won by Tim Dillon (who is now a single figure handicapper for the first time...well done Tim) and John Quinlan with a great effort in B Grade. The new Odyssey style putters are now appearing on our greens (Honorable Secretary and Tee Master)...and I just had to rush out and buy one as well(Pres).
next week is the Bendigo trip for those playing at Ivanhoe we have booked 3 groups teeing off at 7.15am. ... 7.15 will tend to be our normal start off time now daylight saving has commenced.

18th October 2003
The first real warm spring day (27 degrees) and obviously everybody felt the heat as the whole club failed to make a round to their handicap!!. Ben Smith had the high score of the day with 35 stableford points .. well done Ben. So was the poor play due to heat exhaustion, sun stroke, sun light sensitivity, ultra violet exposure ... we'll never know. Lets hope we acclimatise quickly!!

Andrew Tome blitzed the A Grade field to win 2 shots clear with the best stableford score of the day 39. Rodger the Dodger had a good win in B Grade (35 points) with the rest of B Grade close on his heels, which propels Rodger into joint lead in the club championships with Allan. A miserable wet day that forced these members into the SHAME FILE. Des Nixon and guest, Targe Mifsud and David Ford who walked off after 9 holes 'cos they was a bit damp :-(.
The remaining TRUE golfers were soundly beaten by Stephen O'Sullivan with an outstanding 40! which is great at any time but in the conditions was great! Tony Mifsud and our up and coming new member Paul Paladino won the B grade with 33 points. Placings were

At last a sunny and perfect day for golf! Those of our brethren who have migrated to the Northern Hemisphere take note that we are now entering bliss - Spring in Melbourne - will ye no come back!! The good conditions encouraged excellent scoring and the latest member of the Clarke family to join our band, Paul hit 70 off the stick and won A grade easily with a +7. El Preso, Allan narrowly won the B grade with a +4 proving that we all play better golf when we are on holidays! Full Results were

Note Andrew is adjusting the Eclectic to deduct half the current handicap (presently its deducting the full handicap) and a new update will be posted shortly.

13th September 2003
After a lot of carfeul organisation by our tee Master we managed to have the first ever Ambrose day will all pairs and no threesomes which made the scoring simpler. Each pair played the best ball from tee to green and putted out on the greens. The winners by a hairs breadth were Ashley Spicer and Nick Rogers with 62.75, close followed by Brendan Mitchell and Stuart Clarke with a 63.

6th September 2003
Fine conditions today encouraged Bobby McDonald to his best round in 5 years with a net 77 for the monthly medal trophy and B Grade winner. Steve Cole put in a great net 63 and easily won A Grade. The results for the competition are
A) S.Cole(63),B.Mitchell(67),A.Spicer,A.Petricola(68)
B) B.McDonald(58),P.Palladino(66),F.Howe(68)

HOPE YOU'RE ALL GETTING READY FOR THE MELB CUP WEEKEND TRIP!!

Andrew P. I noticed the eclectic calculation is incorrect. The calculation should be the total score off the stick less HALF the latest handicap. The current results are deducting the FULL latest handicap.

30th August 2003
All the TRUE golfers turned up on this seemingly 'orrible day and were rewarded with a round with NO RAIN!!! David Howard won A grade AND the jackpot NTP with $54 !! Neil Argall had another win (a charge could be underway) and shared the B Grade winning spot with Allan Davies, your humble presidente. Paul Clarke has now gained his card and starts with a handicap of 9 so watch out A grade. Paul was unlucky not to be eligible for his eagle today but now his handicap is official he can have a go at filling his wardrobe with eagles nest booty.
Results today were:
A Grade) D.Howard(34),B.Mitchell(30),D.Ford(28)
B Grade) N.Argall,A.Davies(35),B.McDonald(31),T.Mifsud(27)

23rd August 2003

Laurie, we were sorry to hear that you'd suffered some health problems and are back home. All our thoughts are with you....get well soon mate!!!!

Once again we dodged the rain and had a cold start but dry round.
The matchplay final was closely fought with a late recovery and win by Targe Mifsud over Stephen O'Sullivan on the 18th green (It can't get any closer..great final and well done to both players). The results for the Stableford competition are
A Grade) A.Petricola(39),D.McDonald,D.Ford(38),A.Spicer(37)
B Grade) N.Argall(38),B.McDonald(37),A.Davies,P.Paladino(35)

At the committee meeting today two motions were tabled. (1) That the present method of splitting of A and B grade is reviewed and championship points awared regardless of grade but on the ball run (2) That players get either fewer but better quality golf balls or cash to buy their own brand. Another point raised was that new members do not know the rules regarding competitions, these are now documented (click on Club Rules at the top left side of the screen)

Some of you may know Duncan in the pro shop who is in hospital recovering from the removal of a benign brain tumour. He is convalescing and can;t have any visitors yet.

16th August 2003
Not only did the Kiwi's put down the wallabies on Saturday but BrenDON put down all the competition to win A grade today........I'm sure he's wallowing in the afterglow!! 28th June 2003
A damp and boggy day was encountered by our fearless matchplay quarter finalists who provided the general layabouts and dogs bodies at the clubhouse with rivetting entertainment at the 18th green and an exciting (but short) playoff on the practice green.
Stuart Clarke defeated Ben Smith 3 & 2
Stephen O'Sullivan defeated David Howard 4 & 2
Steve Cole defeated Ken Grist 4 &3
and finally Targe Mifsud defeated David Ford in a playoff on the 18th green where the feared David Ford chip and run couldn't make his usual uppen down and Targe dropped a 10 foot putt to win.
MATCHPLAY SEMI FINALISTS ARE
Steve Cole vs Targe Mifsud
Stuart Clarke vs Stephen O'Sullivan

21st June 2003
Well done to Bob McDonald who had rounds of 38 and 37 to win the Fred Howe Winter Cup with an aggregate total of 75 stableford points. Ken Grist (2nd with 72 points) and Tim Dillon (3rd with 71 points) couldn't quite capitalise on their strong first rounds. Bob was the most consistent and proved that this is the key to winning two round competitions.

The man 'imself, Fred Howe, had two good rounds with a top ten finish and won one of the balls in the ball run. A continuing inspiration to keep playing this silly game!!

14th June 2003
The first round of the Fred Howe Winter cup was played today and as usual the coldest and wettest day of the year was with us. Even our hardy mother country bods of scottish and welsh origins had 4 or 5 layers of clothing!! Commiserations to Andrew Petricola who shot a great round but can't play next week...for some reason the other members did not break down in tears. Tim Dillon is the first round leader with 40 points and a 76 off the stick..well done Tim!!

23 players today with the A Grade/B Grade split at 16 handicap. A closely fought first place was won on countback by Andrew Tome whose Eagle on the 14th clinched the countback. Andrew won A Grade with Derek McDonald 2nd with net 67 and Andrew Petricola 3rd with net 68. B Grade scored well and Ken Grist won with a Net 65, Des Nixon had 67 for second place and David Ford third with 68. Note first second and third places exactly the same in both grades...spooky

12th April 2003
Well the horror of two consecutive par rounds is over for another year. The winner with a 79 off the stick and +3 todaya for an aggregate total of +4 is Andrew Tome. The other players in the leader group were ahead of Andrew up to the 11th hole and he fought back to win over the last few holes. Well Done Andrew. Second place went to David Howard with a very respectable +2 and Tony Mifsud and Tim Dillon ran third with +1. A great day out with the course looking a bit greener with 20mm of rain last night (Thank goodness). The sausage sizzle was its usual gourmet standard - thanks to Roger for organising the food and Gordon for being master cook.

5th April 2003
The David Ford Autumn Cup first round was played today with the man himself, David Ford acquitting himself well to hold second place after round 1 with a +3. He was edged out of his own cup leadership spot by Tony Mifsud (2 inches from hole-in-one on 12th!) who had an excellent +5 and has set the pace for next week.

Current notable scores after round 1 are:
T.Mifsud(+5), D.Ford(+3), N.Rogers(+2), R.Clarke, D.Howard, A.Petricola, A.Tome(+1)
A.Davies, T.Dillon(square)

Nearest the Pins went to 12th Tony Mifsud and 15th a tie between Ashley and Targe.

The EAGLES NEST finally went off to Nick Rogers(24 balls), the last one was Bob McDonalds Hole in One on the 7th on 17th August 2002!!!

We'll be floating the A/B grade cutoff after the David Ford (today it would have been 16).

29th March 2003
The February monthly medal was held today (So the David Ford Autumn Cup can begin next week). The winner with a blistering 61 (71 off the stick was Stuart Clarke (El Boom Boom) who has been outdriving the Primrose recently!! (SOrry David I know your not here but we remember where you used to land your drives!). Bad luck to David Howard who had a 62 and broke 80 only to be trounced into second place.

22nd March 2003
Stuart Clark and Gordon Hill won A. Grade (both square) and Tony Mifsud won B Grade with top score of the day +1. I personally am incredibly embarrased that my -5 got second place!!!!! Perhaps we all don't really like PAR!!!

Tim Dillon(A-40) and Gordon Hill (B-42) both won their grades today in hot steamy condition s after the first rainy day in weeks. The greens were slow with humidity unusually high.

The results today were calculated based on the revised split of A grade which is handicap 17 or less. this gave a split of 10 A grade and 11 B Grade.

Note. From next week A Grade will be 0-17 handicap and B Grade 18-36

The Eagles nest (now at maximum of 24 balls) almost went off this week .. its just not the same with 'The Primrose' cleaning it up .. by the way talking of Mr. Primrose WHERE ARE YOU...WE'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW YOU"RE DOING!!!

8th February 2003
Are we all high on drugs, this was simply the best scoring week for years with 17 out of 25 players with 85 or better off the stick and 7 players out of 25 with 40 points or better! A very
high standard .. KEEP IT UP!

Derek McDonald put in another great round (his best in fact) and got 42 stableford points to win A grade, with Tim Dillon in 2nd place (42) and Andrew Petricola 3rd with 40. B Grade had 3 first place winners with Laurie Mannix, Bob McDonald and John Quinlan on 41 points, Second place Allan Davies with 40 and 3rd place Fred Howe with a 33.

Welcome back to Tony Mifsud after a long break. Tony has his 3 cards in and is now on 18 in A Grade.

I was asked to review the A and B Grade split so far this year the splits based on 19 or higher in B Grade are as follows

     Date   A  B    Ratio
 4/01/2003  9  6     1.5
11/01/2003 12  6     2.0
18/01/2003 15  6     2.5
25/01/2003  9  5     1.8
 1/02/2003 16  8     2.0
 8/02/2003 18  5     3.6

If the split had been based on B Grade as 18 or higher then the results would have been

     Date   A  B    Ratio
 4/01/2003  7  8    0.9
11/01/2003  8 10    0.8
18/01/2003 10 11    0.9
25/01/2003  7  7    1.0
 1/02/2003 12 12    1.0
 8/02/2003 11 12    0.9

If we switch B Grade to 18 or higher then this will work now while the summer conditions prevail however the winter will push handicaps out by one or two strokes, so maybe we have a sumnmer split of 18 or higher for B Grade and a Winter split of 19 or higher for B Grade??

1st February 2003

Winner of Monthly Medal, Derek McDonald

A Grade
1. Derek McDonald - 63
2. Ashley Spicer and Keith Delzoppo - 65
3. T. Dillion, D. Howard, G. Hill, D. Ford - 67

B Grade
1. A. Davies, J.Quinlan, A Blight, F. Howe - 67
2. T. Jackson - 68
3. B. McDonald - 73

What you may notice from these results is that 67 was a very popular score - why is this so?
Possibly because we're all brilliantly handicapped :-)

Well done to Derek who played like a man possessed!!!

PS. Before Neil gets his cruel journalistic claws into me, yes its true that I left my bag and clubs outside the clubhouse for two days.....................El Presidente avec chagrin!!

25th January 2003
Enduring the hottest day in Melbourne since 1939 16 of our 18 golfers slogged it out in the heat to finsih with respectable scores. A Grade had 3 winners, Nick Rogers, Derek McDonald and Ashley Spicer with 38 points and B Grade was taken out by the honorable secretary Neil Egbert Argall with a score that was higher than all other B Grade players. Unfortunately Brendan Mitchell had a 39 and would have won A Grade but his handicap had expired a few weeks ago so he has to put in 3 cards again .. sorry Brendan but thems the rules!

El Presidente soaked up the sun in Bendigo last week which has been on Stage 2 water restrictions for a few months. I popped in to look at Axedale and it was still green so the Campaspe River is saving the course's bacon.

18th January 2003
A resounding 45 from Des Nixon blitzed the scoring today in B Grade, close on his heels was the Champion of Champions, Fred Howe with an excellent 40. Nick Rogers returned from holidays, well rested, and won A grade with 39 points from Andrew and Laurie.

11th January 2003
A few more golfers today as players returned from holidays. Rodger Clarke continued his good form (and skinning) with a +5 to win the B Grade and hurtle himself into A Grade!! Laurie Mannix was runner up in B Grade with a +4 and Sir Frederick Howe kept up his form with a +2 and third place. In A Grade the new Vice President, Sir Andrew Petricola won with a +3 closely followed by Stuart Clarke and Andrew Tome (PS. Andrew Tome remind me I've got one of your trophies..Ed.), 3rd place in A Grade went to Derek McDonald.

THE CLUB PASSES ON ITS SADNESS AND CONDOLANCES TO THE HILL FAMILY WHO LOST LISA'S MOTHER IN THE WEEK.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our members. The Championship points have been reset to zero and now's your chance to set your new years resolution to play your best golf. The first monthly medal of the year was played last Saturday with only 4 groups due to holidays. Chris Priems showed his club spirit by driving back from the beach just to play!! Congratulations to Stephen O'Sullivan for a net 65 to take out the monthly medal. Stephen has been a big improver and has laid down the gauntlet to the rest of the club. Rodger the Lodger convincingly took out B grade and amassed a small fortune in skins winnings!
