2007 News

Best Scores for 2007.

Net Strokes 59 Andrew Blight
Par +9 Bob McDonald
Stableford 42 Oliver Gross
Off the Stick 70 Oliver Gross

Handicapping Note. As from week the handicapping system will alter slightly to accomodate the new rule voted on earlier in the year. The change means second place handicap will now be allowed to go out rather than the case in previous years which was a zero adjustment.  Also note that the winner of the Vin O'Meara (and other majors)  will be penalised TWO shots rather than one as previously.
Your honorable handicapper.

24th November 2007
Well thats it folks the last official game for championship points and Eclectic competition for 2007 has been completed today. The Eclectic winner for the year is Chris Priems with a net 48 strokes (wouldn't that be a good round!!). Note as voted on the final handicap for the  Eclectic calculation is the handicap that was played with on 24th November.

Malcolm Adey has today won the December monthly medal (second for this year) and B Grade with an excellent 65 today..keep it up Malcolm!!. Craig Sharp took out the A Grade competition with a 67.

It was great to see Jeff Vinton  win the B grade competition, how soon fortunes change after the Echuca trip.  I was watching Jeff's swing today and the word was that he got some tips from esteemed President. Rodger Clarke continued his fine form with a win in A grade. The championship is still a tightly run contest and with one week to go it will be extremely interesting for both the competitors and spectators.

The new points system was discussed and Neil will be letting me know the options that will need to be voted on next week.  The options will cover the proposed point systems and the points arrangement for major competition rounds. I will post these options on the website and e-mail them to everybody as soon as I get the details from Neil.

For those newer members a quick word of explanation about the Calcutta which will be held next week followed by a barbecue sausage sizzle.  The Calcutta is an auction for each player who will participate in the two-week Vin O'Meara competition starting on December 1st. Bids are taken for each player and the winning bidder "owns" that player for the competition.  If their player wins the competition they will win 70% of the total pool, for second place is 20% of the pool and for third place 10%.

New Points System
The last committee meeting determined that we would be changing the points system and removing A and B grades.  Having had a discussion with a few of the members, here is my understanding of what we will do commencing from the Christmas competition. T
he suggested points for the placings would be -

Please raise any questions or concerns with the committee members. This has to be resolved  before the Vin O'Meara competition and voted in at the AGM.

3rd November 2007
Another successful weekend away. Haven't got full results yet but will publish once I get them. The winner by a country mile was David Howard who had 68 points after a blistering 43 on the first day.  Damien Lee did a great job as club captain and came runner up with Tony Mifsud  in 3rd place. Rain threatened but we were blessed (as usual) with fair weather for both rounds.

27th October 2007
Well another warm day today which goes to show that we can expect a long hot summer.
Oliver Gross powers on to lead the club championship with a win in A Grade today with 35 stableford points, 4 clear of the rest of the grade. B Grade outperformed A Grade today with Malcolm Adey and Ken Grist shooting 38 stableford as joint B Grade Winners.

Its our weekend away next weekend and only 2 groups are booked in at Ivanhoe so there will be no need for a tee master.  We are staying at the
Paddle Wheel Motel 385 High St Echuca 5482 3822 so I'll see you all there.
Results for today are

20th October 2007
A Grade split was 14 today (ie. A Grade is 14 or less). Damien Lee had the high score for the day (+3) and also won A Grade to once again demonstrate that the championship is still wide open. Tony Mifsud won B grade with a creditable par round (square). Well done gents!. The first really warm day 30deg which is the start of  a long dry summer coming up. You may have noticed that the grass around the greens is quite lush. This will continue to be the case as I heard that the course rating is being increase. Don't forget the weekend away is only 2 weeks away!
Results for today are

Well  I think we'll have to change the handicapping system because there were a record number of players tying up positions in both grades today. In fact there were so many ties I almost couldn't fit the names on the handicap sheet!!
The only clear winner today was Rodger Clarke  who won B grade 2 points clear and A grade winners were A) S.O'Sullivan, Ed Kloprogge, Oliver Gross, and Craig Sharp(35). Not long now until our trip away!!
Results for today are
A Grade) S.O'Sull,E.Klop,O.Gross,C.Sharp(35)C.Priems,D.Lee(34),K.Grist(32)

6th October 2007
Congratulations to our president Neil Argall on his retirement and just to celebrate Cheryl and Neil knocked off a 25 year old bottle of Grange Hermitage!!
Only 13 players today and 5 groups are booked for next week. The split was 14 and lower in A Grade.   Andrew Blight was our monthly medal winner with a net 68...well done Andrew. The Mifsud brothers jointly won B Grade - I can still hear them moaning and groaning how unlucky one was versus the other .. don't you love sibling rivalry :-)
Results for today are
Monthly Medal Winner: A. Blight
A Grade) A.Blight(68),G.Hill,E.Kloprogge(69),O.Gross,D.Lee(70)

22nd September 2007
Good to see El Presidente back playing golf after his turn. Be even better when we all get him to give up the smokes!!
As I was tee master today I put some of the A graders together and they produced excellent golf  with Stuart Clarke  and Oliver Gross both going head to head to jointly win the A Grade competition and another group member Stephen O'Sullivan coming in second. The Latin Lover, Keith Delzoppo has obvioulsy benefitted from his spell and is now swinging like Tiger (Tim) to win B Grade  also with 36 points today - for your additional prize Keith you can run the tee next week :-). Conditions were excellent today as we enter the spring weather but a bit chilly for the first 6 or so  holes.
Results for today are:
A Grade) S.Clarke,O.Gross(36) S.O'Sullivan(35) K.Grist(34)
B Grade) K.Delzoppo(36) D.Ford,R.Clarke(33) L.Mannix(31)

15th September 2007
Only one player today got into + figures for their PAR round and that was Ken Grist with +1 who took out the B grade today. Oliver Gross and Craig Sharp both tied square in A Grade with square. Conditions were excellent today and the greens are really looking good now...Well done Howard and crew.  Ed Kloprogge got the jackpot on the NTP hole today and was rewarded with $32.

Note. Tee time is 7.30am next week ..  my wife will be so pleased :-)
Matchplay Final
Every year we seem to have an exciting Matchplay Final and this year was no exception. Stephen Butterfield was leading a fair part of the match with three strokes up on Chris Priems.  Chris fought back to even up the match after 18 holes and the President, Neil Argall, nominated the holes on the practice green for a deciding chip off.  After three chip offs Stephen popped in a 15 foot putt to become our 2007 Matchplay champion. Congratulations to Stephen for hanging on and keeping his cool on the chip off.  Well done to Chris for fighting back to force a play-off.
Committee Decision
Last week I mentioned the committee decisions I could remember and there is one further one that was proposed relating to increasingly membership fee to $20 so that the Christmas competition and function would be covered by each member regardless of how many times they attended during the year.
Your Statistics
I have finally caught up all the history database for your scores. If you click on 'Your Statstics' on the left side of the screen you can view your score history.
Stableford Competition
Meanwhile the rest of us were playing our Stableford competition for the day. Tony Balcombe won A grade with an excellent 39 and Allan Davies recovered from his holiday and managed to win B grade with 35 points.

Results for today are :
Matchplay Winner. S.Butterfield d C.Priems on 4th chip-off
A Grade) T.Balcombe(39),S.Clarke(38),Targe Mifsud(37)
B Grade) A.Davies(35),D.Ford(34),M.Adey(32)

1st September 2007
Congratulations to Malcolm Adey our monthly medal and B Grade winner for September 2007. This is a great effort and its good to see our newer members winning trophies..Stephen Butterfield, Craig Sharp and Oliver Gross tied for 1st place in A Grade which is always a tight competition each week. As yet I haven't cleared up what the Eagles Nest actually is so if one of you know where its at please email me and I will update the sheet.

Several decisions were made at the committee meeting, the ones I remember are
- Second place handicapping change for next calendar year (in future will be adjusted as normal)
-
Single grade for next year with first 6 places getting points
- Annual trip to be on weekend other than Melbourne Cup Weekend

Results for today are
Monthly Medal Winner. Malcolm Adey.

B) M.Adey(68),D.Howard(69),L.Mannix,D.Ford(76)

25th August 2007
Congratulations to Chris Priems, A grade winner and Tony Balcombe, B grade winner, who both won their grade with 36 points. The club championship is now poised at an interesting battle between Damien and Chris with Ken and Rodger chasing up the rear (metaphorically speaking). During the week I updated most of the handicapping information and I intend to update the web pages with Gordons news items and update the player statistics during the week. That way the complete history will be preserved (immortalised?) in the web pages. It was great to see Brendan O'Sullivan and Peter O'Keefe pop in for a game today. Guests are always welcome especially if they buy a round of drinks after the game :-).
Results for today are
A) C.Priems(36), S.Clarke(35), Targe Mifsud(34)
B) T.Balcombe(36), D.Ford(35),D.Howard,M.Adey(29)
NTP is a jackpot carry over.

TEE MARSHALL FOR NEXT SATURDAY IS STEPHEN BUTTERFIELD

COMMITTEE MEETING NEXT WEEK
Motion proposed by Targe is that the Eclectic final round is calculated using the final handicaps calculated AFTER the final round. David Howard is checking the previous committee decision on this to present to the meeting on Saturday (Don't forget to bring the minutes David)

18th August 2007

Well the handicapper is back and a big thanks to Targe Mifsud for handling the handicaps while I was away and Gordon Hill for keeping the news flowing, they did a great job ...CHEERS TARGE AND GORDON!! Gordon has updated his comments this week so I'll resume those next week

It was a big welcome back to our man Gulliver. Allan returned from his travels around Australia and OS today looking fit and tanned. Apparently the retirement bank took a pounding as he lived the high life on a well-earned break. What better place to get his feet back on terra firma than to be back playing golf with us. Good to see you Big Al.

Unfortunately we got some not-so-good news before hitting off today. Our illustrious President Neil had a small scare by heading off to hospital after a small ‘stroke’. Get well soon and see you back hitting that 3 wood better than ever.

And wasn’t it good to see the rev up from last week’s news about lifting our collective game came off. Four (4) players scored better than handicap today. Stuart and SOS continue their consistent form with a win in A Grade and Rodger and Ken wining B Grade. All players had 37 points. The rest dropped off a little but these scores look promising for some very competitive golf in the coming Spring.

The handicap split today was 0-13: A Grade  (9) 14+: B Grade (8).

REMINDER TO ALL: Check before hitting off which competition we are playing. It can get confusing some times with half the club playing in the Golf Access competition, but we all must be clear on the game that our club is playing on the day.

A GRADE: 1ST S.CLARKE & S.O’SULLIVAN–37  2ND D.LEE–32  3RD C.SHARP-30

B GRADE: 1ST R.CLARKE & K.GRIST-37  2ND TO. MIFSUD-35  3RD T.BALCOMBE-33

NTP: TONY BALCOMBE

Big Gap while handicapper gallivanting around the globe. Gordon did a weekly report and some of these are shown below

11 August 2007
Most of us weren't sure whether to bring our animals two-by-two in case there was an ark being built. However, right on tee off the rain stopped, the clouds gradually moved off and we played in some quite warm weather after that. We saw quite a few magpies that seemed a little shell-shocked as we walked but we stirred Chris and Targe and Andrew anyway!!  Richo, Richo man, I want to be a Richo man!!!!
The second semi-final of the match-play was fought out today with Chris Priems beating Targe Mifsud 3 & 2. Well done Chris. This sets up a super final between Chris and Noodles (who apparently has been laying down for quite some time now!). It'll be a battle of the heavyweights, a Frasier vs Ali, a real ding dong go. It happens on 8 September. Be there!
The handicap split this week was A: 0-13 (8 players)  B: 14+ (9 players)
Derek was head and shoulders above the crowd today with a very nice round of 38, 4 points ahead of anyone else. The average scores by the rest of us were probably indicative of the wet weather and our struggle to put decent scores together. It's about time we started getting more competitive - socks up.
A Grade winner D.McDonald 38, 2nd C.Priems, C.Sharp 33, 3rd G.Hill 30.
B Grade winners  M. Whelan, N.Argall 34, 2nd B.McDonald, T.Balcombe 31 3rd              K.Grist, A.Blight 27 (oh dear)
Nearest the pin  Eddie Kloprogge (4.68cm on the 4th)
THIS WEEK:  STABLEFORD
TEE MARSHAL:  Neil Argall

4 August 2007         AUGUST MONTHLY MEDAL
Congratulations to Tony Mifsud for winning this month's medal. He won the day on a countback from a bucketload of players. Four (4) scores of 69 were put in with Tony winning the post mortem calculations. The talk after was all about 'if only'. It was a matter of 'if only I'd got that putt on the …' and 'if only I was a bit luckier on the  …' A good competitive day of golf nonetheless. Well played.

Day three of the 'floating' handicap and we had 23 players to split. The most even division of the handicaps today saw A grade up to 14 and B grade 15+. It will be interesting to keep tracking the split week by week.
(N.B. this curiosity - K.Grist comes second in B Grade one week and third in A Grade the very next week)

Our illustrious President Neil won the NTP with a 3-wood on the 18th to about 1 metre to a tricky pin placement. His early morning whinge about the hole selected for the NTP disappeared into thin air as he walked up the 18th. Oh and he got his birdie!

Congratulations to Mal Whelan - his first ever birdie came on the 11th. Chipped in for 3.

Results:
A Grade: 1st - C.Priems 69    2nd - S.Clarke, D.Lee & O.Gross 70   3rd -  K.Grist 71
B Grade: 1st - Tony Mifsud, A.Blight, D.Howard  69  2nd - M.Adey, B.McDonald 71  3rd - N.Argall 73

28 July 2007
We had a beautiful day eventually after a little drizzle and how nice to see a few more players back on the track. Nice to see Russell Crowe - oops sorry - Sir David Ford after a stint at filming as well as Andrew B and Laurie. The improving weather may be bringing the troops back.

Day two of the 'floating' handicap and we had 20 players to split. The most even division of the handicaps today was at 14. There were 9 players at 13 handicap and below with 11 players above. The A Graders shot some very fine scores again with Chris and Oliver scoring 38's, Stuart on 37 and Damien on 36. The race for the Championship is hot, hot, hot!! B Grade was won by Mal Adey with a serviceable 34. The rest kicked and cursed all the way around.

EAGLES NEST WAS WON TODAY - Stuart Clarke on the 17th.

Matchplay semi-final: one match played today resulted in a 3 & 2 win to Steven Butterfield over Tony Mifsud. Well done Noodles.

Noodles nearly snared the NTP with lovely shot on the 4th today but it landed a little too much over the maximum 5 metres.  A suggestion was made in the grumbling crowd today that we should consider charging anyone who has not contributed to jackpot pools $1 for each week the prize has jackpotted. One to consider for the next meeting.

Results:
A Grade: 1st - C.Priems & O.Gross 38    2nd - S.Clarke 37   3rd - D.Lee  36
B Grade: 1st - M.Adey 34   2nd - Tony Mifsud, R. Clarke, K.Grist 30   3rd - A.Blight 29
NTP: JACKPOT

21 July 2007
Ahhhh - winter in Melbourne. A crisp 2 deg C - foggy and very damp under foot. The course is looking as green as it ever has but it was very wet, muddy and soft. The real meaning of being plugged was revealed today - 12- 14 cm straight into the turf was not uncommon. It'll be nice to get out the guitars and play unplugged for a change!! (sorry couldn't resist that joke).

Well today was day one of the 'floating' handicap. The daily handicap split will now be done based on the most even division of the handicaps on the day i.e. the closest 50/50 split of the handicaps that can be made. Today there were 16 players: 7 players at 13 handicap and above with 9 players under that. Under the old split, we would have had 10 and 6. We'll see how it goes.

That Gordon has done it again. Not only has he streeted the field with a magnificent +1 (it is useful to have the power of the 'pen'), his handicap was such that it placed him in B Grade today and with the new handicap split rules, afforded the big boys a lucky win in A grade! Four points each in the club championship for Chris and Damo was a real bonus. Them's the rules.

Noodles is starting to get back into gear and snared the NTP with lovely shot on the 18th.

Results:
A Grade: 1st - C.Priems & D.Lee SQ    2nd - O.Gross & SO'S -1   3rd - S.Butterfield -2
B Grade: 1st - G.Hill     +1    2nd - N.Argall     -2    3rd - Tony Mifsud -3
NTP: S.Butterfield

14 July 2007
Happy Bastille Day mon amis. The final round of the Fred Howe Winter Cup was played today and what a great sight to see the one and only Fred Howe there to announce the winner. Fred is looking pretty good these days and could easily burgle a game or two from us young ones when he comes back to play.

Stuart Clarke continued his great form with an impressive 39 points to win the Winter Cup on a total of 76 points. A distant second was yours truly (probably still feeling the effects of a few beers with Petricola and Quinlan in the old Blighty) on 71 points and Oliver Gross on 70 points. The rest - daylight.

Thanks to Eddie for grabbing the tongs and cooking up the bar bq. Well done also for the official complaint to Howard re the very slow play of the group in front of our first group. We cop it some times and it's fair to point out others at fault.

Thanks to Rodger for arranging the barbie food. (More bread next time though).

Results:
1st - Stuart Clarke 76 pts 2nd - Gordon Hill 71 pts 3rd - Oliver Gross 70 pts
NTP: Bob McDonald - $36 with a "didya see that" 3.5cm shot on the 12th.
NTP: Ball - Gordon Hill

PLEASE NOTE: The current handicap sheet shows correct handicaps coming into this week and is accurate except for the adjustment column. It only shows the adjustments to handicaps following round 2 of the Winter Cup. Week one adjustments have been calculated but cannot be shown

12 May 2007

The day's play was full of fog and mist to start proceedings - and I don't mean those who got home late from Friday night activities! The heavy fog descended over the course and cleared after a couple of hours play. It was again a beautiful day from then on and some reasonable scores posted. Targe continues his consistent play with a fine 39 points, Chris sneaks in under the guard with a solid 36 points and the two Daves racked up competition points in B Grade. Well done to all.

The last of the first round Matchplay games were played today. Dave Ford won 1 up over Ken Grist and Dave Howard won 2 up over Andrew Tome. The third match was a walkover for the emergency, Bob McDonald, who turned up and had no one to play.

Results:
A Grade: 1st - Targe Mifsud (39)  2nd - Chris Priems (36) 3rd - Steve O'Sullivan, Ken Grist (35)
B Grade: 1st - Dave Howard (36)  2nd - Dave Ford (35) 3rd - Tony Mifsud (34)

D.HOWARD vs B. McDONALD     Targe MIFSUD vs F. KITSON

17th March 2007
The big scoring last week seemed to have subsided following the handicapping adjustments. Both grades were won with stableford 38 this week (Derek McDonald - A Grade and Allan Davies - B Grade)
. Apologies to Malcolm Adey who was give second place in B Grade but unfortunately has not got all 3 cards in so is still a qualifying player (with two cards now submitted)

10th March 2007
An extraordinary day for scoring with the high score for the day +9 from Bob McDonald, his fellow B Graders must have wondered what they needed to do as 2nd place was +7 ! and 3rd place +6. A Grade winner today was Gordon Hill with +3 and Bob McDonald with +9! Well done Bobby!

1st round of the Matchplay commences next week (one match already completed Tony Mifsud beat Rodger Clarke 1 up) so matches for next week are
D Lee  v C Priems
S Clarke v D McDonald
F Kitson v D Petrovski

I am in the process of handing over the handicapping to Targe so this is the first week we are both doing it and seeing if we get the same answers. I'm away for 4 1/2 months and during that time Targe will be doing the handicapping and updating the handicap sheet on the website. Some of the information such as 'Your Statistics' won't be kept up to date, however the statistics won't be lost and will be updated when I return in August. The matchplay results and eclectic will be kept by Targe and won't be on the website while I'm away

I thought I'd play a little joke on Gordon so I have put a Flash video of his special address routine here .
Note it will take a minute or so to load the first picture and about another minute for the video to start .. but its worth it :-) You may need to load Flash if you haven;t already got it (its quite safe to do so).

A good turnout for the medal with our new A grade split now 14 handicap or less. Back tees were appalling today so after seeing Howard he has advised that the back tees won't be in play for a few months to get them back to a playable standard.
Monthly Medal and A Grade winner by 2 net strokes today was Andrew Tome with a net 63 (included his first par back nine ever) .. well done Andrew.      B Grade was won by the evergreen Fred Kitson with a net (69)....good effort Freddy.
Note. Tee time is now 8am.

24th February 2007

Well I almost wimped out today as the rain was pelting down as we arrived and it look set in for the day. After several club members reminded me I should show solidarity and strength I reluctantly got ready. Well.. would you believe it ... we walked on the first tee, the rain stopped and we had a rain-free round! ! How wrong was I ! A Grade saw joint winners today Stuart Clarke, Damien Lee and Ed Kloprogge, B grade meanwhile was won by Ken Grist.

38 degress today and very dry conditions. I took a divot in the fairway on the 2nd hole and it looked like a dry biscuit!!
A Grade was again much larger than B Grade so a vote was taken with a committee quorum to reduce the cutoff point from 15 handicap down to 14 handicap beginning March Monthly Medal (week after next). Targe and I checked the new cutoff point and estimated from the regulars it would give us 11 in A and 10 in B which is a realistic split. The Par competition today certainly had a good number of players playing close to their handicaps and hence a lot of drawn places. The outstanding round was from Gordon Hill who shot +6 with the nearest A grader at square and David Howard showing some of his old form and winning B Grade with +3.

5 groups today in much cooler conditions. Hand watering of greens and tees has been going well and green surrounds were fluffy and lush although the fairways are now getting lots of poor lies. A Grade had the majority of players today so we will be looking at the cuttoff for the second quarter (committee decided on quarterly cut-off reviews) in the next meeting. Stephen Butterfield continued his fine form and won A Grade easily by 2 points with a 38 and also wants to let all members know He did not break the tape measure! . Targe Mifsud and Eddie Kloprogge tied for B Grade first place, again with 38's.

3rd February 2007
A pleasant 29 degrees today with course still playing long because of the dryness. This suited our monthly medal winner Stephen Butterfield who shot a net 68 to win the medal by 1 shot from Derek McDonald and Allan Davies. Overall scores were fairly high today even though the ball is going a lot further.
The new teee roster is working well....next week should be Stuart Clarke but someone said he was injured in which case it will be Allan Davies.
A/B grade cutoff point still seems ok as we have been swinging from one to the other in numbers.
Note. the new tape measure will have a 5 metre radius for the NTP;s (until that tape gets stuffed)

Australia Day with 5 groups today as other slackers (including me) had other commitments. I actually had a very pleasant weekend in Bendigo and visited the golf courses which although dry were all playable. The grades were a lot better balanced today with Trevor Jackson winning B Grade with 36 points and Chris Priems winning A grade also with 36 points. Can't comment any further this week except Kenny Grist has now hit the top of the championship table!!.

A hot steamy day today with only 4 groups. A Grade had most of the players and B Grade only sported 3 players today. We will be reviewing the cutover for A and B grade this week and informing our esteemed President of the recomended cutover point for next month.. The best round of the day was 70 off the stick and 42 stableford from Oliver Gross and B Grade winner was Rodger Clarke.
I won't be around for the Australia Day holiday so everybody enjoy the long weekend next week. (Targe can you grab the cards next week please)

Well we're already at our fourth game of the new event calandar (includes the Xmas competition). A Grade put in some solid rounds today with four players beating their handicaps and Andrew Tome just tipping out the challengers with 39 points. Ken Grist was the only player in B Grade to beat his handicap with a great 41 points.
