David Howards news from the Old Course at St Andrews

Gents, photo of me and the old fella’s I went to the Open with. This is the Wednesday night and the Scottish mist has come in (for the one and only time thank goodness). The bloke with his arm around me is Donnie Rieter, winner of two Oz amatuers and runner up in two Vic opens. Knows Howard well. Bloke to his right is Peter Duffy, 60 years of age playing off plus 1. The others ranged from 7 to 2 (on Yarra Yarra). I told ’em I had a bad back on my way to a lazy 91 at Crail. Also told em that Ivanhoe was one hard track!

Editors Note. The Swilken Bridge that Tom Watson kissed in his last farewell to the British Open this week.

A very wintry day with 80km/h winds and freezing conditions did not stop Bill Eastoe and Mal Fleming playing to their handicaps and taking out joint first place today. Kazim and Gordo were only one stroke behind so it was a closely fought competition. I bet the sudden charge to arctic conditions was a challenge after coming off a nice sunny cruise :-).

Next week is the annual Fred Howe Winter Cup which is stableford format played over two consecutive weeks. As usual the winter conditions are well and truly with us for this traditional competition.

Golf Poem

In My Hand I Hold A Ball,

White And Dimpled, Rather Small.

Oh How Bland It Does Appear,

This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.

By Its Size I Could Not Guess,

The Awesome Strength It Doth Possess.

But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,

I’ve Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.

My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same,

Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.

It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,

A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.

It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry,

And Hate Myself And Want To Die.

It Promises Me A Thing Called Par,

If I Hit It Straight And Far.

To Master Such A Tiny Ball,

Should Not Be Very Hard At All.

But My Desires The Ball Refuses,

And Does Exactly As It Chooses.

It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,

And Disappears Before My Eyes.

Often It Will Have A Whim,

To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.

With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,

It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.

Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,

If Only It Would Find The Hole.

It’s Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,

And Swear That I Will Give It Up.

And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,

But The Ball Knows … I’ll Be Back Tomorrow

Stand proud you noble swingers of club and losers of balls

A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.

That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Kind of makes you proud. Almost feels like a hybrid.
